U.S. Eliminated from World Cup after lopsided 4-1 defeat to Belgium

The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) was officially eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, July 6, 2026. The host nation suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Belgium in the Round of 16.
The U.S. team struggled defensively from the opening whistle and was undone by individual errors. Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Malik Tillman equalized for the USMNT in the 31st minute with a deflected free kick. De Ketelaere scored his second goal just two minutes later to make it 2-1.
In the 57th minute, U.S. keeper Matt Freese was dispossessed outside his box, allowing Hans Vanaken to score into an empty net. Substitute Romelu Lukaku sealed the 4-1 result for Belgium with a stoppage-time goal. Adding to the disappointment, American star Christian Pulisic was forced off early in the second half due to an apparent leg injury. Players like Pulisic and Tyler Adams struggled throughout the tournament and it was on full display during this match.
The result marks yet another exit in the Round of 16 for the United States, duplicating their finishes in 2010, 2014, and 2022. With this loss, coach Mauricio Pochettino's squad exits their home tournament with a final record of 3-2-0. All three host nations—the USA, Canada, and Mexico—failed to reach the top 8, with each country crashing out in the Round of 16. Belgium now advances to face Spain in the quarterfinals.
Throughout the tournament, the moniker, "Why Not US?", was repeated by coach Pochettino, but the reality is what did the USA really accomplish at this World Cup? Victories on home soil over teams the level of Paraguay, Australia and Bosnia Herzegovina are results that should be expected. When a tougher opponent presented itself in Belgium, the USA once again failed to provide a competitive match. Questions will remain as to how far a player like Pulisic can take the USA, and should a player as limited as Tyler Adams be expected to lead your midfield? The USA will need to improve dramatically if they want to give a better showing at the next World Cup in 2030.
