Red Bulls Strengthen Backline with Loan Move for MNUFC's Devin Padelford

HARRISON, N.J. — The New York Red Bulls have bolstered their backline for the final stretch of the Major League Soccer season, securing Homegrown defender Devin Padelford on loan from Minnesota United FC.
Padelford, 23, brings valuable MLS experience and versatility to Michael Bradley’s squad. A natural left-back who can also slot in at left wing-back, Padelford has been a steady presence in the Loons' system. Since joining Minnesota's first team in 2023, Padelford has appeared in 61 matches and scored 2 goals. During the 2026 campaign, he has featured in 20 matches, scoring 1 goal.
The Maplewood, Minnesota native recently signed a contract extension with MNUFC through the 2028/29 season. However, with Minnesota reshaping its roster following the summer transfer window, the young defender will head out on his second career MLS loan stint. Padelford previously spent time on loan with St. Louis City SC in 2025 as he appeared in 10 matches, which included 9 starts.
For the Red Bulls, the addition provides crucial depth and tactical flexibility as they position themselves to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. Padelford’s physical profile and ability to read the game align well with New York's high-pressing identity.
In exchange for the defender, Minnesota United receives the discovery rights to Dutch fullback Cherrion Valerius. The Loons successfully finalized a loan for Valerius from NAC Breda just as the MLS summer transfer window closed on Wednesday.
This move can be seen as a possible replacement for Matthew Dos Santos, who has struggled all season defensively at left back for the Red Bulls. Padelford is expected to join the Red Bulls immediately ahead of their upcoming regular-season matches.
