McGlynn’s 98th-Minute Winner Stuns the Cosmos

The Cosmos suffered a devastating loss as midfielder Conor McGlynn shattered the New York Cosmos' hearts eight minutes into stoppage time, scoring a dramatic game-winner to lift Westchester SC to a 2-1 victory at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson.
The local derby featured two sides that had been in their best form of the season, and Cosmos looked to take advantage of playing at home in hopes of moving up the league table. After a week that featured the resignation of Head of Soccer Giuseppe Rossi, Davide Corti's side looked to provide some joy for the Cosmos faithful. Corti's side featured a largely unchanged lineup with the exception of Stalyn Acosta returning from injury to replace Nestor Cabrera at left-back.
The New York Cosmos took control from the opening whistle, setting the pace and dominating midfield possession as they tried to break down Westchester Soccer Club's defense. Despite this, Westchester stayed organized and compact, absorbing pressure and aiming to counter-attack. Both teams had opportunities to score, but dangerous moments were rare in the first half. The Cosmos struggled to create threats through Lamin Jawneh, which seemed to limit their offensive efforts. Just when it seemed the teams would enter the locker rooms without scoring, the visitors found the net deep into first-half injury time. After a dangerous cross from Daniel Burko that the Cosmos defense couldn't clear, Koen Blommestijn seized the loose ball in the 45+2 minute, finishing the play to give Westchester a surprising 1-0 lead.
The story of the match remained largely the same after the intermission, with the Cosmos driving numbers forward in search for an equalizer while controlling the majority of the ball. Looking to provide a spark, the Cosmos would bring in Darren Sidoel and Christian Koffi in place of Ozzie Ramos and Lamin Jawneh. Koffi would provide a threat but was unable to finalize some plays on goal. The Cosmos persistance would finally pay off in the 83rd minute when midfielder Philip Spengler found the back of the net, sending the Hinchliffe Stadium faithful into a frenzy. Nestor Cabrera who was introduced into the match in the 77th minute in place of Stalyn Acosta, would do well to create space by dribbling past a defender and nicley slot a ball into the box for Spengler who would unleash a shot from a tight angle past a diving Marinelli to level the score.
With time rapidly ticking, Cosmos looked the likelier of the two to score the winner as they pushed aggressively for a decisive full three points. However, just as the match appeared destined for a 1-1 draw, Westchester SC staged one final push deep into added time. The Cosmos, on a counter, had numbers, but a Spengler pass was intercepted, and Westchester did well on the transition. Eight minutes into second-half stoppage time, Blommestijn delivered a cross into the box and found Mackic, who in turn found Conor McGlynn, who found a window of space, dribbled past Garcia, and put the ball into the back of the net for a dramatic winner. The stunning blow broke the deadlock, snapping a brutal road drought for Westchester SC and leaving the Cosmos empty-handed at the final whistle.
The defeat would mark another undeserved home loss for Cosmos, who recently fell to Sarasota Paradise by the same 2-1 scoreline in a match where they warranted a better outcome. This loss also hinders the momentum the team had built on the road. With Richmond Kickers up next, it's crucial for Cosmos to secure a much-needed victory to maintain the positive momentum for the remainder of the season.
New York Cosmos Head Coach Davide Corti commented on the team’s overall performance:
“We had a good reaction. We definitely played better in the second half. I think if Koffi shoots one-touch instead of trying to come inside, and Spengler shoots instead of taking the dribble, we have opportunities there. We eventually deserved to win this game, but this is the league. If you don’t pay attention, like what happened twice — a one-v-one in the box in the first half and a counterattack in the second half — it is what it is. It was a good game. We deserved at least to get one point at home. The mentality was good, and hopefully we can carry on this way and finish better.”
On the slow start and the team improving in the second half:
“The game plan was to play in behind and find the spaces. They were man-marking in the midfield. Lamine was not feeling very well, so usually when you can easily beat a man in a one-v-one situation, we were missing that in the first half. In the second half, with Koffi, we got more space, more crosses came in and there were more combinations in the middle of the field. We’re happy that Koffi is back in good shape, and we’re going to have another arrow in our bow.”
