Cosmos Fall Short in Boise

Despite numerous chances and a stoppage-time goal from Sebastián Guenzatti, the New York Cosmos fell 2-1 to Athletic Club Boise on Friday night. While dropping points, the squad showed a continued fighting spirit on the road against a top-of-the-table contender.
The Cosmos aimed to extend their recent success on the road as they took on an in-form AC Boise team, which recently announced their move to the USL Championship in 2027. The Cosmos presented an unchanged lineup in a battle between two in-form sides. The match started with Boise taking the initiative but with Cosmos showing they could play on level terms with them. Nevertheless, Boise would strike first in the 10th minute. Jonathan Ricketts would win possession for his side and sent a cross into the center of the penalty box. Lurking in the middle of the area, Bodily took the incoming pass and struck a clean, left-footed shot directly into the bottom-left corner of the net, beating New York Cosmos goalkeeper Javier Garcia. Despite the early setback, Cosmos would look the more dangerous side the rest of the first half despite having less of the ball, as demonstrated by earning six corners in the first half. Despite a good first half, Cosmos would go into the break down 1-0.
The second half would begin with Cosmos taking the initiative in looking for the equalizer. This would open some space for Idaho and Tumi Moshobane; however, Cosmos' defense was up for the task. Moshobane would unleash a dangerous shot in the 68th minute, and Garcia would do well to keep the Cosmos in the match. An inspired Lamin Jawneh would do well for Cosmos to maneuver into the box, but his shot would barely miss the target. Cosmos would bring in Darren Sidoel in the 71st minute for Ozzie Ramos as they pursued the equalizer. Garcia would again keep Cosmos in it with a 73rd-minute save on Jake Croll's left-footed shot. The match would open up soon after with two clear chances for Spengler, and Jonathan Kliewer would make another great save on a blast from distance from Jawneh after intercepting a Boise pass outside the area. Minutes later, Boise would take advantage of Cosmos pushing numbers forward, and Jesus Barea would find Moshobane in the box, and the attacker would slot the ball into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0 for the home side in the 81st minute. Despite the setback, the team would not give up and continued to push forward. In the 94th minute of stoppage time, striker Sebastián Guenzatti would score to cut Athletic Club Boise's lead to 2-1 following a pass from Spengler into the box. Guenzatti would do well to control the ball and drive the ball past Boise goalkeeper Jonathan Kliewer before a brief scuffle between both sides. The match would end with Cosmos dropping the match despite creating numerous chances and out-shooting Boise.
Despite the Cosmos' loss, they once again proved they could compete with another of the top teams in the league. Although their chances of making the playoffs remain slim due to their rough start, the current Cosmos team is establishing itself as one of the stronger teams in USL League One.
