Cosmos Fall 2-1 to Sarasota Paradise Despite Dominant Display

In a match that will be remembered for missed opportunities, the New York Cosmos suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Sarasota Paradise. Despite controlling large stretches of play and dictating the tempo, lack of fortune in front of the goal ultimately proved costly for the hosts.
The Cosmos came into the match on a four-match unbeaten streak, looking to continue their rise up the league table. Davide Corti fielded the same lineup that came away with a 1-1 draw, with the only exception being Jordan Chavez replacing Anderson Holt at center back, a bit of a surprising move as Holt has been one of the more consistent players on the side and had started all league matches entering the day.
The match began with both sides feeling themselves out, with Sarasota having more of the ball but not creating any danger. Around the 25th-minute mark, things picked up, and Cosmos started to move the ball with fluidity and generate some chances. Lamin Jawneh got the Cosmos' first shot of the match in the 34th minute, hitting the ball wide from the top of the box. In the 37th minute, after a good sequence by Shamit Shome and Ajmeer Spengler, Jawneh hit a curling right-footed shot from the center of the box, but the ball clanged off the bar. A minute later, Frankie Ljucovic had a chance from the right side of the box, but his shot was saved by Alex Sutton. The Cosmos increased the pressure in hopes of opening the scoring before halftime, but nothing came of it, and they had to settle for a scoreless draw at the half.
The second half would start with Cosmos pushing for the opening goal, while Sarasota Paradise remained deep and highly organized, looking to withstand the attacking sequences and seeking counter-attacking opportunities. Things would change in the 51st minute, following an interception by Sarasota close to the Cosmos area. The ball would find its way to Andres Rodriguez, who would whip a dangerous cross into the six-yard box. Brendan Krueger would take advantage of some indecision in the Cosmos box and redirect his header past Javier Garcia to give Sarasota an improbable 1-0 lead. Cosmos would not be deterred and would look for the equalizer. Ajmeer Spengler would test Sarasota on separate occasions in the 54th and 55th minutes. The biggest chance would occur in the 57th as Ajmeer Spengler's rising header from close range would hit the crossbar. The play would initiate from the right side off a cross by an active Justin Milovanov. Shamit Shome would have a good chance in the 60th minute on a left-footed shot from the center of the box. In the 71st minute, Lamin Jawneh would find space out wide, maneuver well, and send a nice cross to Spengler, whose right-footed shot would be brilliantly saved by Sutton. Despite the constant danger, the equalizer would not come for Cosmos. The Cosmos would bring in Darren Sidoel into the match in the 73rd minute in place of Ozzie Ramos.
Things would get worse for Cosmos in the 77th minute. With Cosmos pushing numbers forward, Anderson Rosa would finish off a nicely executed counter-attack by Sarasota to make it 2-0 for the visitors. The sequence would begin when the Cosmos' Néstor Cabrera was pressured and aggressively shielded off the ball in midfield. Sarasota's Ethan Bryant picked up the loose ball and initiated a rapid drive forward down the center of the pitch. Despite having two Cosmos defenders closing in on him, Bryant kept his composure on the run. He threaded a perfect, sliding through-ball into the left side of the penalty area. Rosa timed his overlapping run flawlessly to get in behind the defense, met the pass in stride, and fired a low, first-time shot past goalkeeper Javier Garcia into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the USL League One season. Perhaps Garcia could have come out more on the play to put some pressure on Rosa.
Despite playing quality football, New York found themselves down by two goals. Corti reacted by bringing in Tino Puentes and Nick Zielonka in place of Nestor Cabrera and Shamit Shome in the 79th minute. Despite what appeared to be an insurmountable lead, Cosmos did not give up and pressed forward. Lamin Jawneh scored a late lifeline for the New York Cosmos in the 83rd minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 after being set up by teammates Frankie Ljucovic and Darren Sidoel. On the play, Ljucovic drove the ball forward and combined with Sidoel to overload the final third, forcing the Sarasota defense deep into their own penalty area. Sidoel worked the ball up the field, slipping a quick pass across the face of the defense. Jawneh found a pocket of space, timing his position perfectly to exploit a rare gap in Sarasota’s compact shape. Jawneh then fired a left-footed shot from the right side of the box to the top left corner; the world-class strike gave further life to Cosmos. The Cosmos had a few more chances to equalize but, unable to break through, ended up losing by a 2-1 score.
Despite the loss, the Cosmos continue to show they are a team on the rise. With a bit of luck, the Cosmos could have easily won this match. On the weekend, they face a difficult trip to Ft. Wayne, but if they continue to create chances and limit defensive mistakes, a result on the road would not be a surprise.
