Jawneh’s Equalizer Not Enough as New York Cosmos Drop 2-1 Road Decision
October 3, 2026 Paradise Sports Complex. Naples, Florida

FC Naples recorded a 2-1 victory over the New York Cosmos. Playing in front of a crowd of 3,057 fans at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex, the hosts managed the match and, despite an early second-half push from Cosmos, came away with three vital points in their USL League One playoff push.
The day following the Cosmos' announcement of CEO Erik Stover's departure, the team aimed to shift the focus to their on-field performance. The Cosmos entered the match with the same lineup that came away with a 3-2 victory over the Richmond Kickers, but with the surprising inclusion of the little-used Davide Materazzi in place of Michael Chilaka in central defense.
FC Naples, needing a win to have any hopes of a playoff spot, started the match dictating play, with Cosmos not being able to provide much resistance. After controlling much of the early possession, FC Naples finally broke through in the 21st minute. A dangerous attacking sequence orchestrated by Gio Miglietti found midfielder Marc Torrellas, who kept his composure inside the box to fire a clinical strike past New York keeper Javier Garcia. Cosmos were unable to muster anything in attack and were held to one total shot in the first half. The goal rewarded Naples for a dominant first half and sent the hosts into the locker room with a 1-0 advantage.
The second half began with FC Naples seeking a second goal. After a dangerous sequence in the box by Naples, Cosmos capitalized on Naples' forward numbers and launched a counterattack with Christian Koffi breaking down the left. In a play involving Frankie Ljucovic, Koffi managed to find Lamin Jawneh in the box, and the Gambian attacker escaped his marker to unleash a left-footed shot past Edward Delgado, scoring a surprising equalizer for the Cosmos in the 49th minute. For the next few minutes, the Cosmos appeared more threatening with the ball, but FC Naples responded and regained control of the match, as continued turnovers in the midfield troubled Cosmos. In the 60th minute, Cosmos narrowly avoided conceding another goal. After a turnover, Andres Ferrin fired a powerful shot from outside the area, and Javier Garcia made a crucial save to keep the score level. The tie lasted until the 69th minute. As they pushed numbers forward, Julian Cisneros found space out wide and delivered a precise pass into the center of the box, locating an unmarked Omar Ciss. Ciss seized the opportunity beautifully, converting it into the back of the net to give Naples a 2-1 lead.
Looking for a reaction, Cosmos would bring in Michael Chilaka and Nick Mendonca in the 73rd minute in place of Nestor Cabrera and Ozzie Ramos, who once again was on a yellow. Despite the need to boost the attack and with Koffi struggling, the lack of a real attacking alternative on the bench forced Cosmos to continue with the same attacking trio. With the match looking under control for Naples, Corti would exhaust his substitutions in the 85th minute. Nick Zielonka, Stalyn Acosta, and Jordan Chavez would enter the match in place of Jawneh, Koffi, and Materazzi. The match would end with FC Naples comfortably securing a 2-1 result. With the loss, the Cosmos are now officially eliminated from playoff contention.
While the Cosmos have several players on the roster who could be key contributors next season, it's clear that the team needs more attacking options. Besides Guenzatti and Jawneh, the production from the front-line players has been a significant concern throughout the season. As the team aims to strengthen its roster to position the Cosmos effectively in League One and honor the club's history, the front line will undoubtedly be a focal point. The reality is that there is currently no player on the bench who can offer attacking solutions for the team.
