As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, we take a look at the 12 groups. Today we take a look at Group I.
The tournament which takes place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will be the first FIFA World Cup to include 48 teams, expanding from the previous total of 32.

Group I Breakdown – 2026 FIFA World Cup
Group I is stacked. No way around it—this is the Group of Death.
You have a European powerhouse, two physically dominant teams with elite-level talent, and a wildcard that could absolutely shake things up. Nobody is safe here, and honestly, every single match could go either way.
Who’s in Group I?
France
Senegal
Norway
Iraq
Top to bottom, this group is loaded with quality—and there’s a real argument that three of these teams deserve to go through.
France – Elite, Deep, and Built to Win

France comes into this group as the favorite—but not by a comfortable margin.
They’re still one of the most complete teams in the world. Depth at every position, world-class talent across the pitch, and the ability to play in multiple styles. Whether it’s possession, counter-attacking, or just pure individual brilliance, France can beat you in different ways.
But here’s the thing—this group won’t let them cruise.
They have the talent to finish first, but they will be tested physically and tactically in pretty much every game. If they lose focus for even a moment, this group can punish them.
Senegal – Physical, Fast, and Dangerous

Senegal is no joke.
They have been one of Africa’s strongest teams in recent years, and they bring a mix of power, pace, and discipline that makes them tough to deal with. They’re organized defensively but lethal when they break forward.
This is a team that thrives in chaos—and in this group, there will be plenty of it.
They won’t be intimidated by France, and they match up physically with almost anyone in the tournament. If they get momentum early, they could absolutely push for first place.
Norway – Star Power Meets Opportunity

Norway might be one of the most interesting teams in the entire tournament.
They have got elite attacking talent—players who can change a game instantly—but they haven’t had as much World Cup experience as the others in this group. That makes them unpredictable.
On their day, they can outscore anyone. But the question is consistency.
Against teams like France and Senegal, they’ll need to stay organized and not rely purely on attacking moments. If they can balance their game, they’re a serious threat to qualify.
Iraq – The Wild Card

Iraq comes in as the underdog—but don’t ignore them.
They have that classic underdog energy: disciplined, aggressive, and willing to fight for every ball. Teams that overlook Iraq could absolutely regret it.
They might not have the star power of the other teams, but they make up for it with effort and structure. In a group like this, stealing even one point could shake everything up. Honestly, that’s all it takes.
Games to Watch
France vs Senegal –This is one of the best group-stage matches in the entire tournament. Physical, fast, and full of talent. Could easily decide first place.
Norway vs Senegal –This one could determine second. Norway’s attack vs Senegal’s athletic defense = a real clash of styles.
France vs Norway –If Norway shows up offensively, this could turn into a shootout.
Iraq vs Anyone –Every Iraq game matters, because they could take points off anyone and flip the group completely.
Quick Prediction
This is brutal to call, but here’s a realistic take:
France
Senegal
Norway
Iraq
But honestly? Norway finishing second wouldn’t be a surprise at all. Even Senegal topping the group isn’t out of the question.
Margins here are thin.
Final Thoughts
Group I is exactly what you want from a World Cup.
France brings the elite quality. Senegal brings the physical edge. Norway brings explosive attacking talent. Iraq brings unpredictability.
There’s no easy game. No guaranteed points. No room for mistakes.
This group is going to be intense from matchday one—and by the final day, don’t be surprised if everything is still up for grabs.
If you’re only following one group closely… this might be the one.
