Cosmos Fall 2-0 to Richmond Kickers

The New York Cosmos in hopes of changing their fortunes faced Richmond Kickers on Wednesday night in a battle between two struggling clubs. Two historic clubs in the history of American soccer would face off for the first time, and in the end Richmond would come away with a 2-0 result.
The Cosmos began the match playing without natural fullbacks due to mounting injuries, while the front line was again depleted due to the absence of Lamin Jawneh and the recently released Chevone Marsh, Ozzie Ramos would make his debut in place of the inured Darren Sidoel. In hopes of generating more chances, midfielder Ajmeer Spengler would be moved higher up the field. Looking at the table Richmond started the match 4 points ahead of Cosmos in a battle to avoid last place.
The Cosmos would provide the biggest chance of the first half as Frankie Ljucovic would find himself in the box and his right footed shot would be saved by Yann Fillon. The Cosmos would control much of the ball but would find themselves unable to generate scoring opportunities. The inability to get Ajmeer Spengler on the ball would limit Cosmos play. In the 33rd minute things would change as Darwin Espinal would do well to finish off a chance in the box after controlling a pass from Hayden Anderson in the area. Once again the Cosmos would begin another match behind. Espinal, a former Cosmos player would celebrate much to the delight of the City Stadium spectators. After more of the same, Cosmos in possession but not generating danger, the match would go into the half with Richmond up 1-0.
The Cosmos would make one change to the lineup at the half, Massimo Morabito, who struggled in the first half, would be replaced by Will Noecker who was coming off of an injury. The Cosmos would have a decent chance in the 53rd minute as Spengler would find Guenzatti, but his right footed shot would be saved by Fillon. The home team would counter quickly, Espinal would attempt a pass into the box which would be deflected by Michael Chilaka. The Cosmos would be unlucky as Espinal would gather the clearance and unleash a right footed shot into the left corner past a diving Stephani. The Honduran would make it 2-0 and the match appeared over as Cosmos seemed deflated. The Cosmos would add Davide Galazzini in the 57th minute in place of Nick Mendonca in hopes of sparking the attack. The Cosmos would continue to possess the ball but not create much. In the 71st minute Cosmos would make more moves in hopes of a late surge, center-backs Anderson Holt and Jordan Chavez would be removed for Davide Materazzi and Nick Zielonka, while Ozzie Ramos would be taken off in place of Justin Milovanov. Things would not improve but only get worse. Will Noecker, who had just returned from injury, would suffer another injury and after being treated on the sidelines for several minutes, would be forced to come out of the match in the 80th minute. The Cosmos would be forced to play the remaining portion of the match down a man. Despite the numerical disadvantage the team would not give up but could not muster any offence and would fall 2-0 in Richmond. With the loss the Cosmos now fall 7 points behind Richmond for last place in the standings.
The Cosmos performance once again highlighted the issues facing the team all season. Despite controlling much of the match, the inability to generate chances in the attacking third is a glaring issue, and the inability for the wide players to create anything remains a constant concern. The team needs to address its attack and look for fullbacks who can add to the attack if they hope to show any improvement in the last two months of the season.
