Stoppage-time dagger sinks NYCFC at Citi Field

New York City FC suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 home defeat against the New England Revolution on Wednesday night at Citi Field. Despite a second-half equalizer from Luighi, a 93rd-minute stoppage-time goal by New England's Dániel Gazdag snatched away a crucial home point for the Boys in Blue.
Needing a result to end a lengthy winless streak, NYCFC started the match playing with confidence and pinning the Revolution back as they looked for an opening goal to set the tempo of the match. However, New England would be the team to open the scoring. Against the run of play, New England turned the momentum around on their first real attacking sequence. Following a short corner, New England's Jack Harrison whipped a dangerous cross into the box. The ball ricocheted off the arm of NYCFC defender Aiden O'Neill, forcing a penalty. Revolution captain Carles Gil stepped up and calmly buried the penalty kick into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0 for the visitors in the 12th minute. After the goal, New England sat back in their defensive shape, disrupting New York's attack. NYCFC dictated the pace and controlled most of the ball but went into the half unable to generate a real threat. New England was content to take the one-goal lead into the half.
The second half would start with much of the same, New York attacking and New England sitting back absorbing pressure. NYCFC's persistent second-half pressure would finally pay off. Nicolás Fernández slipped a brilliant pass behind the New England backline to find Luigi, who guided his first-time finish past goalkeeper Matt Turner to make it 1-1 in the 71st minute. NYCFC would push forward looking for a much-needed late winner, with New England seeming content with a draw on the road. However, with NYCFC pushing heavily for the goal, New England would catch them on the counter in the 93rd minute. Ilay Feingold delivered a pinpoint cross into the center of the box. Revolution newcomer Dániel Gazdag controlled the ball beautifully with his chest and flashed a low, decisive strike into the bottom corner to seal the match. New England would celebrate a big three points as they continue to move up in the East, while NYCFC would extend their winless streak as they continue to drop in the table.
Although New York's performance on the field has demonstrated quality football, the results just aren't materializing. If the results don't improve NYCFC will see themselves outside the playoff line.
