10-Man Chicago Fire Collapse Inflicts Devastating Blow to NYCFC Playoff Hopes

In what is now their most unforgivable meltdown of the 2026 MLS campaign, New York City FC completely self-destructed at Soldier Field, falling 2-1 to a 10-man Chicago Fire FC squad. Entering the high-stakes match with a grasp on the Eastern Conference’s final postseason wild-card spot, Pascal Jansen’s men held an early 1-0 lead and a literal man advantage for the entire second half. Instead of executing a comfortable road win, a catastrophic late goaltending blunder completely derailed their evening, swinging the gates wide open for their rivals while pushing NYCFC's playoff destiny to the absolute brink.

The afternoon began with complete optimism for the Pigeons. In the 19th minute, a quick attacking sequence saw Agustín Ojeda pick up his career-high 11th assist, squaring a beautiful ball to Hannes Wolf, who smartly curled a finish past Chicago keeper Chris Brady to establish a 1-0 lead. The advantage looked unshakeable in the 43rd minute when Fire midfielder Djé D’Avilla picked up his second yellow card for a reckless challenge on James Sands, earning a red card ejection and leaving Chicago short-handed. Yet, instead of utilizing the 11-v-10 numerical advantage to suffocate the game, NYCFC dropped their intensity. Chicago aggressively struck back in the 55th minute as Anton Salétros slotted home a short-handed equalizer.

The defining disaster arrived in the 87th minute. NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese entirely misjudged an unpressured, short backpass inside his own six-yard box. Freese underhit a casual clearance directly into the path of a hard-charging Maren Haile-Selassie, who intercepted the errant ball and effortlessly tapped it into the completely vacant net to seal the 2-1 shocker.

With just one win in their last ten league matches, the Pigeons are plummeting at the most inopportune moment. Meanwhile, the revitalized Chicago Fire have surged into 3rd place with 48 points, and NYCFC has now completely fallen out of the top nine playoff spots.

With just six matches remaining on the regular-season calendar, NYCFC trails the New York Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati by three points, with Cincinnati holding a vital game in hand. There is absolutely no margin for error left.
