As New York City FC is actively pursuing reinforcements in the 2026 summer transfer window, a name that has been mentioned is that of 25 year old Brazilian center- back Lucas Frietas.
According to Brazil's Ge Globo Sport, NYCFC has submitted a one-year loan offer to Vasco da Gama with a purchase option for the center-back. The 6' 0 Freitas began his career in the academy of Flamengo before moving to Spain in January 2020 to join Real Valladolid on an 18-month deal. He featured primarily with Valladolid B in Segunda Division B. He did make a first team appearance for Real Valladolid on January 16, 2021 in a 4-1 victory over Peña Deportiva, in a Copa del Rey match. He returned to Brazil soon after, signing with Palmeiras where he would make his Serie A debut. For the 2022/23 season he was sent on loan to Liga Portugal 2 side Moreirense. In 2023 he returned to Brazil, joining Chapoconese, being a regular starter for the side. In 2024 he moved to Brazilian Serie A side Juventude, and once again featured regularly. For the 2025 season he signed with top Brazilian side Vasco da Gama. In two seasons with Vasco, Freitas has appeared in 46 matches scoring 1 goal.
Freitas is seen as a low risk option for New York who can add defensive depth to the squad and even challenge for a starting position.
