Coming into the match on a three-match losing streak in the league, the Cosmos were looking to change their fortunes against the league champion. Despite competing with Knoxville throughout the match on equal terms, three costly mistakes sentenced the Cosmos to a 3-1 loss on the road.

The Cosmos started the match in good form, in a back-and-forth affair both sides had good transition moments which allowed for an exciting start. The Cosmos first big opportunity came in the 14th minute when Nestor Cabrera found Lamine Jawneh in space on the left-hand flank. Jawneh would do well to get into the box and put the ball in the area just beyond the reach of his teammates. With Jawneh and Cabrera combining well the Cosmos were providing a stiff test for Knoxville. Things would change in the 19th minute when One Knox’s John Murphy Jr. was taken down in the box from behind by defender William Noecker, drawing a penalty. Babacar Diene’s driving effort from the spot was initially denied by Garcia, who would not hold onto the ball, but the Knoxville forward was quick to the ball and pounced on the rebound to slot it home for a 1-0 lead. The Cosmos would have a great chance to equalize the match in the 30th minute, Ajmeer Spengler would find Lamine Jawneh in space in the center of the field, Jawneh would maneuver right past the keeper Garibay, but slot the ball wide. Things would get worse in the 35th minute, with Cosmos playing the ball out of the back Garcia would receive a back pass in his own box, as he was about to send the ball long, Knoxville attacker Krioutchenkov would step in front of the ball and deflect it into the goal for a 2-0 lead. The unacceptable sequence would put the Cosmos in a hole that the teams’ overall performance did not deserve.

With the two self-inflicted wounds behind them, Cosmos would start the second half with an unchanged eleven. The play on the flanks by Galazzini and Jawneh would continue to cause problems for Knoxville. The Cosmos would make it 2-1 in the 51st minute, Spengler would find Galazzini making a run on the right-hand side, the Italian would sprint into the box and unleash a powerful shot into the left part of the goal to bring the team back into the match. A back-and-forth affair would ensue as Garcia would do well to save Krioutchenkov’s shot in the 65th minute. In the next sequence Jawneh would find Spengler at the top of the box, the Cosmos star would just miss wide. Despite the Cosmos good play, the match would be sealed for One Knoxville in the 73rd minute. After gaining possession on the right-hand side, Galazzini would pass the ball to the center of the field with no Cosmos player in site, Tedd Baker would intercept the ball and fire a shot that was saved by Garcia. However, Garcia would once again give up a rebound on the save, with Mikkel Goling doing well to follow up the play and put the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal to make it 3-1.

The Cosmos would bring in Massimo Morabito for Noecker soon after. With the Cosmos looking to get back in the match, they would bring in Patrick Bohui and Davey Mason for Galazzini and Cabrera in the 77th minute. The last big chance for Cosmos would come in the 81st minute, as Jawneh would find Spengler at the top of the box, with Spengler hitting the ensuing shot off the crossbar. The Cosmos would bring in Justin Milovanov and Nick Zielonka in the 85th minute in place of Mendonca and Guenzatti. It would be too late for the Cosmos as they would fall by a 3-1 score line.

Despite another loss, the Cosmos looked a more cohesive unit. If they could compete with Knoxville, they should be able to get results against the lesser sides in the league. However, the same errors continue to plague the squad. Needless turnovers, costly fouls and goalkeeper blunders are things they will need to avoid going forward, if they want to end the current losing streak.
