Bangladesh Midfielder Shamit Shome Signs with New York Cosmos

Paterson, NJ - The New York Cosmos are finalizing the signing of Bangladesh international midfielder Shamit Shome. Shome most recently played for Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League.
Shome joins Cosmos after playing his entire ten year career in Canada. A central and defensive midfielder, he is noted for his work rate, tactical intelligence in the center of the pitch, and high-level professional experience across North American leagues.
A highly regarded Canadian youth international, Shome began his career in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with FC Edmonton in 2016. He was a regular starter for Edmonton in his first season as a pro appearing in 28 matches. His play with Edmonton earned him a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Montreal Impact in 2017. By the 2019 season Shome became a regular starter for Montreal. On April 24, 2019 Shome scored his first professional goal for Montreal in a 3-0 victory over New England Revolution. Shome also helped Montreal to the 2019 Canadian Championship, starting both legs of the finals series in which they defeated Toronto FC. He would end his time in MLS in 2020 after appearing in 52 matches and scoring 1 goal with Montreal.
For the 2021 season Shome returned to FC Edmonton, this time in the Canadian Premier League (CPL). After a solid first season with Edmonton he signed with fellow CPL side Forge FC, but was immediately loaned back to Edmonton for the 2022 season. In his two seasons with Edmonton he made 52 appearances and was regarded as one of the top central midfielders in Canada.
Shome signed with Cavalry FC ahead of the 2023, and became a prominent member of the squad anchoring their midfield. He played a crucial role in helping the club to the 2023 CPL Shield and the 2024 North Star Cup. Shome was also a part of Cavalry FC's famous 2-1 victory over Pumas UNAM on February 6, 2025 in the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup. The historic win marked the first time a Canadian Premier League (CPL) club defeated a Liga MX side in a official tournament match. Shome would leave Cavalry FC after the 2025 campaign.
On the International front Shome was called up to the Canadian senior team in January 2020, ahead of friendlies against Barbados and Iceland. He would go on to make two appearances for Canada. After not appearing for Canada in over 5 years, Shome would acquire his Bangladeshi passport and receive clearance from FIFA to represent Bangladesh. He would make his debut for Bangladesh in June 2025, and on October 9, 2025 he would score his first international goal for Bangladesh, in a 4-3 defeat to Hong Kong in a 2027 Asian Cup qualification match.
As a free agent, Shome looked to secure a move outside of Canada. It was reported that Dutch Eredivisie side Willem II were interested in signing the Bangladesh international, but a deal fell through as he lacked a EU passport. Shome was also linked to several English Championship and League One sides, including a training stint with Scunthorpe United, but it appears he finally decided on the move to New York Cosmos.
While the move for Shome can benefit Cosmos on the sporting side, it can also benefit the club from a marketing and attendance perspective. The Cosmos home, Paterson, NJ, is home to the largest Bangladeshi community in the state and one of the largest urban Bangladeshi diaspora populations in the United States, second only to New York City. An estimated 15,000 residents of Bangladeshi descent live in the city.
